What is Testosterone?

Testosterone is a hormone produced in the testes in men. Though it is thought of as an exclusively male hormone and is responsible for the development of male sexual characteristics, it is not unique to males. Testosterone is also produced in the ovaries and adrenal glands in women.

Testosterone is far more than just a sex hormone. This hormone travels to every part of the body with receptors from your brain to your toes. According to many researchers, over 6 million American men and women suffer from a low testosterone levels and need to be treated for this deficiency.

Testosterone begins to decline by the time we reach 30 and it has a number of effects on muscles, bones, the central nervous system, bone marrow, and sexual function. Testosterone levels decline gradually, over the decades, and because it comes on slowly, men and women often accommodate to the symptoms and do not realize how much they have lost. Imagine, if for a moment, you could flip a switch and feel like you did at age 25 to 30, the change would be very evident and become more so as you get older.

Testosterone deficiency is also referred to as Hypogonadism, here are some of the symptoms of testosterone deficient patients:

•  Decreased mental sharpness

•  Decreased energy and strength

•  Decreased muscle and

•  Increased fat

•  Decreased sex drive

•  Decreased sensitivity to stimulation

•  Decreased strength of orgasm

•  Decreased erectile function

•  Depression and/or loss of eagerness and enthusiasm

•  Irritability (20-25% of men - heard of "grumpy old men")

•  Increased risk of cancer (low testosterone levels increase risk)

The goal of testosterone therapy is to minimize, prevent, or reverse the affects of the above age related problems. The beneficial effects of attaining healthy testosterone levels are seen for both men and women.

Testosterone benefits

Men and women who receive testosterone therapy consequently report that they feel sexier, stronger and healthier. They state that it makes them feel as they did when they were in their prime. After all, this is what replenishment of hormones is all about. It is about restoring hormones to youthful levels so you can feel as you did when you were at the peak of your physical, sexual and mental ability.

Testosterone can stop and reverse the physical decline that robs us of our energy, strength and libido. Testosterone can restore muscle tone and prevent muscle wasting. Testosterone can restore healthy sexual excitement and desire, which in turn, results in an improvement in mood overall well being and quality of life.

Restoring testosterone to youthful levels in both men and women can reverse the majority of physical, sexual and physical dysfunctions we face as we age. All too often, men and women automatically assume that as they age, their vigor and virility capacity will diminish. There is no need to accept this loss. Testosterone can play a critical role in helping to preserve and even restore healthy physical, mental and sexual function so that we can live our extended life span with the same excitement and enthusiasm we enjoyed during our youth.

Physicians are witnessing an explosion of interest in testosterone as a result of our growing realization that testosterone levels decline with age and that many men suffer serious consequences to their physical, sexual and mental health as a result. In women, it is expressed as menopause, whereas, in men, it is expressed as Andropause. Many of these symptoms and disease processes that we come to accept as normal aging are processes that are actually secondary to low testosterone levels and are easily correctable.
